What is MRI

Magnetic Resonance Imaging MRI is a common process all over the world. It is a non-invasive and painless procedure. Raymond Damadian created the first MRI full-body scanner. Japan has the most MRI scanners per capita, with 48 machines for every 100,000 citizens. MRI produces a detailed image. It does not use harmful ionizing radiation whereas CT Scans and X-Rays use it. Also, it uses a large magnet, radio waves, and a computer to create a cross- sectional image of internal organs and structures. MRI scanner resembles a large tube with a table in the middle, allowing the patient to slide in. MRI is a test which uses strong magnetic field, radio waves to create detailed images of the organs and tissues within the body. This test is used to diagnose you or to see how well you've responded to treatment. This test helps doctor to diagnose injury or disease and also tell how well you are doing with a treatment. MRIs can be done on different parts of your body. It's a cross-sectional image of internal organs and structures which uses a magnet, radio waves.

How does an MRI work ?
In MRI, the scanner used is a tube surrounded by a huge magnet. The patient is placed on a bed that is moveable. This bed is then inserted into the magnet. Strong magnetic field created by the magnet helps align the protons present in the hydrogen atoms. These hydrogen atoms are then exposed to a beam which consists of radio waves. Receiver portion of MRI scanner then captures the signal produced by the spins(these spins happen because of the beam) of various protons of patient body . This receiver information is then processed by the computer and hence an image is produced.

Types of MRI
Many people are unaware of the fact that there are different types of MRIs. These different types of MRIs differ in terms of strength of magnet used. Strength of magnet used is measured in Tesla(denoted by T). Quality of images produced is directly dependent on the strength of the magnet. There are two types of MRI that are commonly used : 1.5T MRI and 3T MRI. Field strength of scanner used in 3T MRI is twice as powerful as 1.5T MRI. As a result of this 3T MRI produces extremely clear images. The decision to choose between 1.5T MRI and 3T MRI depends upon the body part for which the MRI is being performed. 3T MRI is generally done when high precision is required. Brain scan can be an example where doctor choose 3T MRI. In most of the cases 1.5T MRI proves sufficient.

Why there is a huge difference between the prices of different labs for same MRI ?
There are two main factors that will decide the price set by a lab for an MRI. One is the quality of the imaging machine and second would be the skillset and experience of the radiologist who will analyze the MRI picture. So a lab with good quality machines and experienced radiologists would charge a higher price than a lab who compromises on any one of them.Labuncle provide you MRI from the quality labs who have quality machines and skilled technicians.

What is the difference between MRI vs MRI with contrast ?
Though both methods of scanning are almost the same, in MRI with contrast, patient is given an injection or an oral solution before starting the scan. This solution enters in his bloodstream. The main motive of an MRI with contrast is to highlight certain parts of the body which are under scan. MRI with contrast is useful in the serious cases like detection of tumor that has started growing.
